WHY IN THE NEWS?
Recently, the Centre has asked the Ministry of Railways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to use the soil or silt excavated from ponds and tanks in all districts under the Amrit Sarovar mission for their infrastructure projects.
ABOUT:
- The water conservation mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 24 aims at developing,
- And rejuvenating 75 waterbodies in each district in all States as part of the celebrations of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
- The Mission is to aim at developing and rejuvenating 75 water bodies in each district of the country as a part of celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
- In total, it would lead to the creation of 50,000 water bodies of a size of about an Acre or more.
- The Mission encourages mobilisation of citizen and non-govt resources for supplementing these efforts.
- The project would involve excavation of several thousands of tonnes of earth in the form of soil or silt, the Ministry of Rural Development has told the Ministry of Railways and the NHAI to map its infrastructure projects with the Amrit Sarovar mission sites in all States and UTs.
- This Mission has been launched with a whole Government Approach with 6 Ministries/Department namely:
- Department of Rural Development
- Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation
- Ministry of Panchayati Raj
- Department of Water resources
- Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Changes.
- Department of land resources
