WHY IN THE NEWS?
Recently, India and Japan agreed to enhance their Bilateral Security and Defence Cooperation.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MEETING
- In March 2022, the Japanese Prime Minister was on an official visit to India for 14th India -Japan Annual Meeting to build up their BILATERAL SECURITY AND DEFENCE COOPERATION.
- A logistic Agreement has been signed between both countries.
- India and Japan should work jointly towards implementing their decision to have 5 trillion yen in public and private investment in the next five years.
- Â India urged Japan to support greater investments by Japanese companies in India.
- Such investments would help in creating resilient supply chains and would be mutually beneficial.
- Japanese companies increasing investments in India have been appreciated by India.
- Both Countries noted the progress in the implementation of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project.
- Both countries welcomed the signing of the exchange of notes for the 3rd tranche of the loan for this project.
- Agreed to encourage greater collaboration between private sectors of both sides in the development of next-generation communication technologies.
- India and Japan agreed to deepen cooperation in the area of Clean Energy.
- Took note of the progress in the implementation of the Specified Skilled Workers (SSW) programme.
- Concurred that the India-Japan Act East Forum was useful in prioritising the development of India’s North-East Region.
Recent Developments between both the Countries:
India and Japan upgraded their relationship to ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014.
- The India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that came into force in August 2011 covers trade in goods, services, movement of natural persons, investments, Intellectual Property Rights, custom procedures and other trade-related issues.
- Japan is India’s 12th largest trading partner.
- Defence Exercises: India and Japan’s defence forces organize a series of bilateral exercises namely,
- IIMEX: Naval
- SHINYUU Maitri (Air Force)
-  Dharma Guardian (Army).
- India highlighted the steps taken by it to improve the ease of doing business, and logistics.
- Both countries also participate in Malabar Exercise (Naval Exercise) with the USA and Australia because of India & Japan’s Friendship.
- Both India and Japan are members of QUADÂ and organize Bilateral security and Defence cooperation.
Way Forward
- More collaboration and cooperation can prove beneficial to both nations since India needs sophisticated technology from Japan.
- To combat China’s close cooperation is the best measure and even for the growing role of China in Asia and Indo-Pacific, in physical as well as digital space also.
