WHY IN THE NEWS?

Recently released, REN21’s renewable power capacity of 2022 global status report noted that with this growth,

India is now the third-largest market in the world for new solar photovoltaics (PV) capacity,

And they ranked fourth in the world For total solar energy installations (60.4 GW) by overtaking Germany at 59.2 GW,

And following China (305.9 GW), the US (121.4 GW), and Japan (78 GW).

India ranked 2nd in new Solar Water Heating Capacity addition,
3rd in Hydropower capacity addition, and 5th in Ethanol production addition in 2021.

They providing incentives to domestic and international companies to set up battery manufacturing plants.
India invests $11.3 billion in renewables in 2021.
REN21 is the only global community of actors from science, governments, NGOs, and industry working collectively to drive the rapid uptake of renewables
It was create in 2004 as an outcome of the Bonn 2004 International Conference on renewable energy.

The overall share of renewable energy across the globe has begun to stagnate, rising only marginally from 2009, when it was at 10.6%, to 2019, when it was at 11.7%.
India added around 15.4 GW of renewable power capacity in 2021, which is the third-highest after China (136 GW) and the US (43 GW).
As of 2019, only three countries out of 80 – Iceland, Norway, and Sweden — had a share of renewables in their total final energy consumption of above 50%.
Despite climate commitments, governments continue to heavily subsidize the production and consumption of fossil fuels, spending $5.9 trillion in 2020 – 7% of global gross domestic product (GDP) that year — on direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies.

PRADHAN MANTRI KISAN URJA SURAKSHA EVAM UTTHAAN MAHABHIYAN (PM-KUSUM):
It was launch by the Government of India in 2019, to increase the income of farmers and provide sources for irrigation and de-dieselizing the agricultural sector.
It aim’s at ensuring energy security for farmers in India, along with honoring India’s commitment to increase the share of install capacity of electric power from non-fossil-fuel sources to 40% by 2030 as part of Intend Nationally Determine Contributions (INDCs).

The Solar Park Scheme was launch by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in 2014.
Under this scheme, it was propose to set up at least 25 Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects.
NATIONAL POLICY ON BIOFUELS:
In order to promote biofuels in the country, a National Policy on Biofuels was made by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
