WHY IN THE NEWS?
Major Economies Forum (MEF) meeting was aimed to build on the progress achieves at COP 26 by further strengthening climate action while also addressing urgent energy and food security concerns arising from the Russia-Ukraine war.
MORE DETAILS:
- Major Economies Forum MEF was launch in 2009 by US President Obama.
- It is aim at facilitating dialogue among major emitting countries, both develop and developing, to advance efforts against climate change.
- Participating Countries in Major Economies Forum MEF (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, EU, France, Germany, India, Japan, UK, etc) together account for roughly 80 percent of global GDP and global greenhouse gas emissions.
New Initiatives:
- Global Methane Pledge Energy Pathway: Tackling methane leaks, venting, and flaring from the oil and gas sector.
- Collective 2030 Zero-Emission Vehicle Goal and Green Shipping Challenge to reduce emissions in the transport sector.
- Clean Energy Technologies Demonstration Challenge to break dependence on fossil fuels. Efforts to Enhance Food Security by increasing fertilizer efficiency.
- India also called upon the members of MEF to launch a global movement on LIFE i.e. Lifestyle for Environment as espoused by PM Modi at the COP26 in Glasgow.
