WHY IN THE NEWS?

Recently, United Nations has published its report titled “Habitat World Cities Report 2022.

KEY FINDINGS:

  • India’s urban population is estimate to stand at 675 million in 2035, the second highest behind China’s one billion.
  • The global urban population is back on track to grow by another 2.2 billion people by 2050 in Habitat World Cities Report 2022.
  • After covid-19 pandemic, global urban population is growing again. It will grow by another 2.2 billion by 2050.
  • India’s urban population is likely to reach 675,456,000 in 2035, as compared to 483,099,000 in 2020.
  • Percentage of population in urban areas pf India will be 43.2 percent, by 2035.
  • By 2035, the percentage of population in India at mid-year residing in urban area will be 43.2%.

KEY POLICY POINTS:

  1. Building economic, social and environmental resilience, including appropriate governance and institutional structures, must be at the heart of the future of cities.
  2. The disruptive nature of COVID-19 and the emerging global uncertainties are all stark reminders,
  3. That urban areas need to be prepare for an ever-changing and unpredictable future.
  4. Localizing the New Urban Agenda and SDG 11 is the most promising pathway to the optimistic scenario of urban futures.
City population share doubled from 25 per cent in 1950 to about 50 per cent in 2020, it is projected to slowly increase to 58 per cent over the next 50 years
  1. City densities in low-income countries need to be planned for and managed in ways that future growth does not exert pressure on existing open land, infrastructure and services, and result in crowding on the one hand or lead to unsustainable sprawl on the other.
  2. Enhanced planning capacities for small cities and emerging newer cities will strengthen the important role they play across the urban-rural continuum in achieving sustainable futures.
  3. Effective urban and territorial planning is critical to mitigate the negative social, economic and environmental associated with future urban growth.
