WHY IN THE NEWS?
Recently, Action Agenda on Internal Displacement sets out 31 commitments by the UN system to better resolve, prevent and address internal displacement crises
MORE DETAILS:
- Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are people who are forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict, generalized violence, violations of human rights, or natural or human-made disasters, climate change impacts but who remain within their own country.
- Number of IDPs has reached more than 59 million people (2021). India also saw 4.9 million internal displacements in 2021.
- Challenges face by IDPs: High risk of physical attack, sexual assault and abduction, deprived of adequate shelter, food and health services etc.
The agenda
- The Action Agenda on Internal Displacement has three overarching goals:
- To better prevent future displacement crises
- To ensure stronger protection and assistance for those currently facing displacement.
- These three goals are interlinked. No solution is sustainable if another crisis is looming
- Action agenda also talks about solutions to internal displacement including:
- High level leadership and a whole of government approach by national and international authorities.
- Stepped up earlier and more predictable engagement of UN.
- To help internally displaced persons find durable solutions
- Engaging Private Sector- particularly in supporting the recovery of livelihoods. Relevant mechanisms to collect, manage and use internal displacement data.
India and IDP:
- India saw 4.9 million internal displacements last year.
- In India Internally displaced persons falls into following categories:
- Displacements due to natural disasters,
- Development activities,
- Violence and Conflict
- India has a policy in place for dam-displaced people. But it does not have one for those displaced by political conflict or environmental reasons.
